COURSE DESCRIPTION
​
BIO 200 Undergraduate Thesis is a required course for students of the BS in Biology Program of the Institute of Biology, University of the Philippines Diliman. This course provides students with the opportunity to conduct independent research under the guidance of a faculty. Thesis students of MML can choose to perform either wet lab or computational experiments. The course follows a regular lab-class format that requires regular attendance to scheduled meetings, execution of thesis-related activities, and submission of progress reports and other course requirements.

MML ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

1. Must belong to the COB Track,
2. Completion of at least 95 units of the program,
3. A minimum cumulative GWA of 2.00
4. A minimum grade of 2.00 in BIO 120 or BIO 150, OR a minimum grade of 2.25 in BIO 123*,
5. Keen interest in microbiology and research, and
6. Possess strong organizational and time-management skills.

*Students currently enrolled in BIO 123 and in good class standing may also apply.
EXPECTATIONS FOR THESIS STUDENTS

Key expectations for thesis students include regular attendance to scheduled meetings, submission of progress reports based on the course schedule, good record-keeping practices, proactive communication with the adviser, and ability to work effectively towards the completion of their thesis.
APPLICATION PERIOD

The application period for BIO 200a opens on the first Monday of December and closes at 5 PM on the day of the Lantern Parade during the first semester of each academic year. Applications are evaluated on a first-come, first-served basis, and the application period will close earlier once the lab quota is filled.

LAB QUOTA
​​
Starting AY 2024-2025, the lab will only accept two BIO 200a students for the second semester of each academic year. This policy aims to provide a more focused mentorship experience and help foster a more productive research environment for the thesis students. Priority will be given to the first two applicants who meet all the requirements, including the submission of the Thesis Advising Agreement and Certificate of Acceptance Form, which will be provided by the adviser.

HOW TO APPLY​​​​​​
​
​1. Prepare the following documents: (a) write-up of introduction, including research experiences and interests; (b) screenshot of CRS record on the number of units passed and cumulative GWA; and (c) screenshot of CRS record of grades in BIO 120 and 150 or BIO 123. If the student is currently enrolled in BIO 123, send screenshot of CRS list of enrolled courses for the semester. The screenshots should include the name of the student, and grades in other courses blacked out to maintain privacy.
